Product Story

With its direct or indirect light, easily adjustable height and variety of bright and subdued colours, the Funiculí leaves little room for innovation. Yet there’s one avenue that remains unexplored. Heir to the first Funiculí, this is a new version with a fabric shade, a design that Lluís Porqueras first conceived in 1979 but that is only now seeing the light of day.

Respecting the initial design to the fullest, only its proportions have been updated. In this new version, the cloth on the shade unlocks the light, allowing it to filter through and better illuminate the space. It shares the same structure as the original, so you can easily adjust the lamp to your desired height. The essence of both lamps continues to be their simplicity, but the new design is chic and classical, perhaps even more sophisticated than the original.

Designer: Lluis Porqueras

A pioneer of industrial design in Spain

Born in 1930, Porqueras is known for his timeless and atmospheric lighting designs that are often based on the contrasts of light and shadow as well as vividness and tranquillity.

In 1956 Porqueras established Stoa, the first Catalonian design office. In 1979, Porqueras and Jaume Vaquero founded Vapor. Their objects went against the tide of High Tech design, predominant at the moment. Vapor, instead, manufactured warm, simple lamps. “I made very simple things”, affirms Lluís. “Even though the manufacturing process involved 25 separate operations, the end result was simplicity itself; all I wanted to do was to pare away, to pare away and to pare away until I reached the pure essence of a simple, useful object!”.

In 1995, Marset bought Vapor's catalogue, so many of their projects are still edited to the date.

“Thinking about it, I have always believed that the light in a room must also go with shadow, that there should be contrasts with the points of light. This is what creates well-being, calm; your home must be a refuge from the aggressive outdoors in the city. Lights are lit for several hours a day, and the rest of the time they must maintain a certain discretion so that they do not bother you when they are off, and only become noticeable when they are on… like glow worms. Fashion does not interest me, and I have never made fashionable lights because they soon go out of fashion. I have always made lamps I liked.”
